Skip Bag vs Skip Bin — Which One Actually Makes Sense for Your Job?

Most people searching for a skip bin in Sydney don’t realise there are two very different options. A traditional skip bin or a skip bag.
They both get delivered, both get collected, but the practical differences are significant – Here’s the honest comparison before you book anything.

How a Traditional Skip Bin Works And Where It Gets Complicated

Skip bins are steel containers delivered by a truck with a hydraulic arm. Sizes typically run from 2m³ up to 12m³ or more. The truck drops it, you fill it over however many days you’ve hired it for, and it gets collected when you’re done.

The catch in Sydney is the permit. Most councils require one if the bin goes on the nature strip or street, and in a lot of Sydney properties, and in the older suburbs, this is the only option. Terraces, semis, units with shared driveways, inner-city blocks with short or narrow driveways, the bin ends up kerbside. The permit typically costs around $160, on top of the bin hire.

Damage that can happen to driveways: The heavy steel skip base, when it is placed on concrete, brick pavers, or exposed aggregate can leave marks or cause cracking.
If you have a freshly painted or sealed driveway, you may want to place a large tarp for the bin to sit on.

And here’s the thing nobody mentions until it’s too late: a skip bin sitting with public access for several days is basically a gift to the neighbourhood.
People will dump their rubbish or broken furniture and you’re paying for it if the skip bin goes over the weight or volume.

How A Skip Bag Works

A skip bag is a heavy-duty flexible bag delivered flat to your property. You fill it at your own pace, an afternoon, a day, a weekend if the job is ongoing. When you’re ready, we collect it by crane.

The bag needs to be on private property, your driveway, front yard, or garage.
It can’t go on the footpath, nature strip, or road. For terrace homes with no driveway, a small front garden works well — the crane arm reaches over the fence without any issue.
Our truck needs about 3 metres of clear space around the bag to manoeuvre, so keep that in mind when you’re choosing your spot.

The crane arm needs 7 metres of vertical clearance above the bag. That rules out spots directly under powerlines, cables, awnings, or large overhanging branches.
Most standard driveways and front yards are fine, it’s worth a quick look up before you confirm placement. If you’re not sure about your property, call us and we’ll talk it through before delivery.

Because the bag sits on your property rather than the street, no council permit is needed. No parking spot disappears. The bag material won’t mark or crack your paving. And because it’s on your property, filled fast and gone the same day, nobody’s dumping their rubbish in it at 11pm.

Green Waste — And the Councils That Won’t Collect It

Worth knowing: a number of Sydney councils don’t offer green waste collection at all, or only run it seasonally. If you’ve just done a big pruning job, cleared a garden bed, or had a tree removed, you can be left with a significant pile and no obvious way to get rid of it.

A skip bag handles green waste without the permit cost or the wait for a council collection that may never come. Fill it with prunings, branches, lawn clippings, and garden debris, and we’ll collect it when you’re ready.
The medium or large bag suits most garden cleanouts, the small bag fills up faster than most people expect once branches are in.

What Can and Can’t Go in a Skip Bag

Most waste types are fine. A few things we can’t take for environmental and safety reasons.
We take: general household rubbish, timber and wood, bricks and concrete, tiles and flooring, garden and green waste, plasterboard and drywall, metal and piping, cardboard and packaging, renovation debris, furniture and whitegoods.

We can’t take: asbestos, chemicals and solvents, liquid paint, oil and fuel drums, medical waste, tyres, batteries, gas bottles, food waste, perishables, animal remains, or mattresses.

Mattresses are the one that catches people out, they can’t go in the bag, but they’re absolutely fine for a junk collection service, But more on that below.

The Weight Question, Why It Matters More Than Most People Realise

Skip bags are priced by weight, not by volume.
Every bag includes a weight allowance — 200kg for the small, 400kg for the medium, 600kg for the large — and if your load comes in heavier on collection, an overweight charge gets added to your invoice within 24 hours.

For general waste: $75 per 100kg over your included allowance. For heavy inert waste like bricks, concrete, and tiles: $50 per 100kg over.

This is where people occasionally get a surprise. Light bulky stuff — timber offcuts, cardboard, general household rubbish, stays well within the weight limit.
Dense heavy items are a different story. Concrete is heavier than most people think.
and an old treadmill can weigh 150kg on its own.

If you’ve got a couple of mattresses, a treadmill, or anything where you’re genuinely not sure of the weight, the truck service is worth considering instead.
We charge by volume on the truck, not weight, so heavy items don’t cost you extra.

When A Junk Collection Service Makes More Sense

If you’ve got mattresses, a treadmill, or other heavy awkward items, book the truck. If your volume is large and uncertain, book the truck.
If you’d rather not lift anything yourself — definitely book the truck.

The skip bag is best when you want to fill at your own pace, you know roughly what you’ve got, and the weight is manageable.
The truck is best when the job is bigger, heavier, or you want it done in one visit without thinking about it.
