If you’ve ever tried to get rid of an old mattress, you already know it’s not as simple as dragging it to the kerb. Mattresses are bulky, awkward, and genuinely difficult to recycle, which is exactly why they end up dumped on nature strips across Sydney. Here’s what actually makes them such a headache, and why a bulk removal service like ours handles them as part of a load rather than one at a time.

What makes a mattress so hard to get rid of?
A mattress is built from layers that don’t come apart easily: steel springs, foam, fabric, timber and sometimes latex, all bonded together. To recycle one properly, it has to be pulled apart by hand so each material can go to the right place, steel to metal recyclers, foam to be repurposed, timber and fabric separated out. That’s slow, manual work, and it’s why proper mattress recycling costs money rather than making it.
Send a mattress to landfill instead and it takes up a huge amount of space, springs back over time and can damage compactors. Most councils charge a fee to take one, and many won’t take them in a standard kerbside collection at all.
Why can’t I just put it out with the hard waste?
Some Sydney councils include mattresses in a booked hard waste collection, but the rules vary a lot from area to area, and there are often limits on how many items or how often you can book. If your mattress misses the collection window, or your council doesn’t cover it, it can sit in the garage for months.
Why we don’t take single mattresses on their own
Mr Junk is a bulk removal service. Our trucks, our team and our pricing are all built around clearing a full load: a garage, a house clear-out, an office, a renovation. A single mattress on its own doesn’t fill the truck, so it’s not something we can price fairly as a standalone job.
But here’s the thing: if you’ve got a mattress plus a load of other stuff, old furniture, boxes, garage clutter, that’s exactly our job. The mattress goes on the truck with everything else, we do all the lifting, and as much as possible is sorted for recycling rather than tipped.
The honest advice
- Just one mattress and nothing else? Check your council’s booked hard waste service first, it’s usually the cheapest option for a single item.
- A mattress plus a pile of other things to clear? That’s a bulk load, and that’s where we come in. Send us a couple of photos and we’ll quote by how much of the truck it fills.
We’d rather point you to the right option than take a job we’re not built for. When you’ve got a proper load to shift, we’re ready 7 days a week, same-day when you book before 2pm.
