Sutherland Council offers residents a Council Pick Up but there are many restrictions on what they’ll collect and when. Here’s what you need to know
Council Cleanup:
- 2 free pickups per financial year
- Maximum 3 cubic metres per collection (3m x 1m x 1m) excluding metals/mattresses
- Must book online via Veolia
- Wait times up to 8 weeks during peak period
- Items can only be placed out the night before collection
- Placing items out early = treated as illegal dumping
- Changes/cancellations must be made 7 days before collection
- Must separate items into 4 piles: metals, mattresses, green waste, household items
- Whitegoods collected separately within 5 business days
What Council Accepts:
- Furniture (keep whole, don’t break up)
- Mattresses (limit 2, or 1 mattress + 1 base – may take up to 5 days separately)
- Whitegoods (fridges with doors removed, stoves, washing machines, dryers)
- Electrical appliances (toasters, microwaves, vacuums, heaters, hair dryers)
- Bundled garden vegetation (max 1.5m, no thicker than a broomstick)
- Fence palings and wood (max 1.5m, no protruding nails, max 30 pieces)
- Rugs (limit 1, max 2m x 3m, rolled and taped)
- Plastic containers and drums (must be empty)
- Packaging styrofoam (bagged or boxed)
What Council Won’t Take:
- E-waste (TVs, computers, items with batteries)
- Building materials (bricks, tiles, concrete, renovation waste, asbestos)
- Carpet
- Sheet glass, mirrors, windows, shower screens
- Gas bottles, fire extinguishers – Chemicals, paint, oils
- Car parts, tyres
- Lawnmowers and whipper snippers (anything with fuel)
- Thorny branches, palm fronds, tree stumps, roots
- Fibreglass items (baths, canoes, surfboards)
- Air conditioning units, solar panels
- Bean bags filled with beans
- Items over 1.5m or too heavy for 2 people
- Railway sleepers, treated pine
- Bean bag fill
